The story of ZICO® Coconut Water begins in Central America, where, while volunteering, founder Mark Rampolla took notice that the locals regularly drank sweet coconut water for replenishment.
After returning home and realizing it was hard to find, he decided to bring it to the States. In 2004, Mark left his corporate career to create ZICO® Coconut Water, initially selling it out of a van to New York City yoga studios. He couldn’t make it quickly enough; customers were hooked on its refreshing taste and hydrating benefits.
The story goes on to Thailand, Indonesia, and the Philippines, where our suppliers source coconuts from hundreds of local farmers and work directly with coconut plantations – many that have been in families for generations to bring you crisp, delicious ZICO.
Our farmers blend young Nam Ham coconuts with semi-mature coconuts to achieve the optimal level of sweetness so that we don’t have to add sugar into our 100% coconut water. In 2019, we opened our very own processing facility in Thailand to complement the great work of our partners.

Simply put, ZICO is pure, natural coconut water with coconuts sourced from Thailand and other parts of Asia. Our coconuts are hand harvested and craftily blended into our natural 100% coconut water to deliver the optimal sweetness so that we don’t have to add sugar. With a balanced blend of electrolytes from Mother Nature, including Potassium, ZICO natural 100% coconut water is a refreshing way to stay hydrated and treat your body well.
Coconuts from different regions offer different taste characteristics and nutritional profiles due to soil and climate conditions, so we’re continuously searching for the best tasting coconuts. Currently, the majority of ZICO coconuts come from Thailand and all of our products are produced there.
It is in Thailand that we source “Nam Hom” coconuts. Nam Hom means “aromatic water.” These coconuts can only be found growing on dwarf palm trees in one of the four provinces to the West and South West of Bangkok. Just as winemakers perfect their craft with the “terroir” and growing conditions, ZICO develops our coconut blend starting with a rich, dark alluvial soil. Our farmers hand-select each coconut to ensure the best combination of Nam Hom and mature coconuts is placed in the production line. This creates the perfect level of sweetness that consumers know and love (without any added sugar). And a distinctive nutty flavor that can only be found in Nam Hom coconuts.
