Though in the same family, these compounds are different from tocopherol, in structure, effects, and many other areas. For example, researchers found tocotrienols to be up to 60 times more potent in antioxidant activity than α-tocopherol.
In fact, scientists have proven that tocotrienols at very low levels, more specifically in nanomolar levels (a nanomolar is one billionth of a gram) is able to protect brain cells. However, tocopherol did not have the same effect. Till today, not many compounds in the pharmaceutical and nutraceutical industry can have an effect at such low levels. This was a turning point in tocotrienol research, and was a strong indicator for researchers to launch a human study.
In 2011, a human trial using 200mg of tocotrienols twice daily to test the neuroprotective properties of tocotrienols was completed.
